War & Peace & Lily James

Immediately drop what you’re doing, run to the nearest tv–or anything with a screen and wifi, for that matter–and catch up on the epic new adaptation of Tolstoy’s War & Peace. The four-part series on A+E networks (six-parts on BBC One in the UK) premiered in the US in January and airs its final installment tomorrow, February 7th at 9pm (EST).  War and Peace written by Andrew Davies, directed by Tom Harper and executive produced by Harvey Weinstein, has been met with rave reviews.

The star-studded cast, including Jim Broadbent and Gillian Anderson also features some stars more new to the scene, Paul Dano and James Norton.  None among them, however, shine quite as bright as Lily James. The actress, who became a household name through her roles as Lady Rose in Downton Abbey and the title role in Disney’s 2015 live action Cinderella, leads this cast in her triumphant take on Natasha Rostova.

Set against backdrops such as, the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg and the Rundāle Palace in Latvia, each frame of this much lauded series, looks like a portrait straight out of 19th Century Russia.  These picturesque locations coupled with a brilliant cast and exquisite costuming, bring to life this classic piece of literature.
